Johnon Tomsen (b. ca. 1635; d. ?). Mariner.
Master of the ship the Catherine, a ship of eighty tuns burthen. Resident in 1656 in Shadwell.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-one year old Johon Tomsen deposed on May 29th 1656 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined "On the behalfe of Henry Baldero, William Harris and John Shephard English merchants touching the shipp the Catherine, John Thompson master."[1]
The Catherine was bought by Henry Baldero, William Harris and John Shephard at Rotterdam in March 1656 from a Mr Lambert Schaep, and cost 3000 guilders. Johon Tomsen (despite his curious spelling of his name) claimed to be an Englishman, and to have been the ship's master ever since she was purchased.[2]
